I. Introduction

Some time ago, my MacBook Pro, which was purchased in December 2014 and has only been turned on 4 times so far, fell into my hands, so I wanted to try out how to use this Apple notebook. But I have been using windows system computers, such as the current production tool Thinkpad X230 and the Thinkpad T530 used as a home computer, are all used windows system, and have been upgraded to windows10, and it feels good to use. In particular, the touchpad is set up in the same way as a macbook.

Second, Unboxing

This Macbook Pro 13 is top-of-the-line, i5-4308U+8G+500G SSD. At present, the configuration is still not low, especially the processor, and the current 2015 version of the i5-5257U is almost the same performance. This is what I bought for her. At that time, I wanted to take a lot of photos, including installing windows7 system. After I thought about it, it was not my own. It was difficult to predict the situation. After all, it still fell into my hands.

Compared with the TP X230 that I used at the time and now, it is a big circle, but it is much thinner and weighs almost the same. The X230 is 1.34KG without the power supply, and the Macbook Pro 13 is 1.58KG. It is still slightly heavier. I still prefer 1KG 12 Inch Macbook, I don't know if this month is updated. If you update, consider changing this sale to 12 inches.

Let me talk about the format supported by windows.

1, the earliest is the FAT format, divided into FAT16 and FAT32. The former supports a maximum capacity of only 2G, so it is replaced by the latter, but the latter also has two problems. First, it cannot store files larger than 4G, and secondly, it is easy to generate disk fragments. Poor performance, this is the regular "disk defragmentation" of the Windows XP era is still very important for computers that have been used for a while.

2, this FAT has been replaced by the NTFS format with better performance. Now, after installing Windows7, the default is this format. This format can support a single large file of 4GB or more, and now a game installation package, or a 1080P movie will exceed 4G, so this currently replaces the FAT format, and has a higher security attributes.

3, exFat format, the earliest development of this format is actually used for U disk, because FAT32 does not support a single large file of 4GB or more, and many U disk has exceeded 4G, so this format appears to solve this problem. if you want to know how to recover deleted files from usb. you should use the FAT.

The left side of the picture below is the 32GB SD card, the default FAT32 format, this is the memory card of the original camera, the default is this format, and the right is the 250GB msata SSD's own DIY mobile hard disk, the default format is NTFS format.

Then let's talk about the Mac format. The HFS+ file system is the default file system in Apple. It comes from UNIX and replaces the previous NFS (hierarchical file system), also known as MacOSExtended (or mis-called " HFSExtended"). However, in addition to the NFS+ format, the Mac also supports reading and writing in Fat and exFat formats. However, the NFS format only supports reading and does not support writing. Therefore, many people install plug-ins that support NTFS reading and writing, such as paragon NTFS, but such plug-ins. Usually it is to collect money, of course, there are cracked versions, but similar plug-ins are also flawed, that is, there is a low possibility to crash your system. If you have friends with important information, it is recommended to do more backups.

I said that I chose from the disk format. I believe that when I saw the above, I thought about it. I can use the exFat format. Yes, but after using the exFat format, for a large-capacity mobile hard disk, the actual What is the speed?

Fourth, test read and write speed

Test platform: Macbook Pro 13: i5-4308U, Thinkpad X230: i5-3320M, (all using USB3.0)

Storage device: Sandisk CZ80, mSata SSD assembled mobile hard disk

Test software: Disk Speed Test for Mac platform, Crystal Disk Mark for Windows platform

Preparation: The exFat format uses a Macbook to create the disk format, while NTFS is a disk format created with Windows. The Macbook has the Tuxera NTFS 2015 plugin installed to support NTFS format writes.

First look at the CZ80 Sandisk cost-effective U disk using two formats in Mac and Win system read and write speed:

From the above two test screenshots (tested multiple times, the results are not much different), the following speed:

1, under Windows system, the read and write speeds of exFat and NTFS disk formats are not much different;

2, in the Mac OS system, the read and write speeds in the exFat format are not much different from those in the Win system; however, in the NTFS format, the read and write speeds of the Mac OS system are far less than the read and write speeds of the exFat format.

3, exFat format, Mac OS system than the Windows system read and write speed is slightly lower, but the difference is not big; in the NTFS format, the read and write speeds of the two systems vary greatly.

Then we test it with a mobile hard drive assembled with mSata SSD:

When I got here, I believe everyone has their own conclusions. Here I am talking about my thoughts:

1, if you pursue speed, then exFat format is the best choice, but exFat format also has a disadvantage, that is, the compatibility is slightly worse, such as the old system such as XP can not support, need to install the plug-in, even if it is win7, I have encountered Compatibility issues, need to be formatted, but plugged back into win10 open no problem, yes I use this format.

2, I personally do not recommend the use of NTFS disk format in mobile devices, the first is very hurt U disk (mechanical mobile hard disk can not consider this), because the ntfs partition uses a "log" file system, you need to record detailed read and write operations, certainly Will compare the flash chip, because it is constantly reading and writing; secondly, it is not very good for MacOS compatibility, you need to install the plug-in to write, and the speed is also a lot.

Finally, the Macbook Pro has a Thunderbolt interface. Each lightning interface has two channels. Each channel can achieve a bidirectional 10Gb/s bandwidth, while USB3.0 has a maximum transmission bandwidth of up to 5.0Gbps (500MB/s). Unfortunately, I don't have a mobile storage device with a lightning interface. The price of this interface device is too expensive, the price is too low, and it is not commonly used.

I hope this test report of the disk format has a reference for you, thank you.
